Hallo Freunde!

Willkommen in Deutschland!

Rustic, romantic, charming…

Come experience

the quaint, medieval town of

Bacharach, Germany.

Just imagine…

strolling along the cobblestone streets,

church bells ringing,

villagers greeting one another with a smile,

and a hearty “Guten Morgen!”

Dreams like this

can feel like a fairy tale…

But dreams and fairy tales can come true!

Ours did!

Willkommen to the fairy tale that is Bacharach, Germany today!

DSCN0161

 Bacharach is a storybook town,

sitting on the banks of the beautiful Rhine River.

This romantic village transports visitors back to the days

of medieval kingdoms, castles, and legends of old.

Burg Stahkeck

Bacharach’s crowning glory is its 12th century castle, Burg Stahleck.

Bacharach, DE

Winding our way up to the castle,

we climbed stairs well-worn through centuries of footsteps,

walked along the sturdy, stone walls that once protected this city,

and followed the footpaths along the vineyards,

bearing grapes for the new wine.

Fairy tales…

Burg Stahleck, Bacharach

 Fleeting feelings drew us

back to the Middle Ages,

when Bacharach was the biggest wine-trading town

on the Rhine River.

DSCN0389

Today, Burg Stahleck is a family-friendly hostel,

where guests enjoy the charming views

of the half-timbered town of Bacharach

and the picturesque Rhine Valley below.

Winding our way back down the path from the castle,

we admired wildflowers,

bravely growing on the strong, stone walls,

and delicate blossoms here and there,

as the first hints of Autumn filled the air.

Oberstrasse,

the main street of Bacharach,

welcomes visitors

with its timeworn cobblestones.

Bacharach’s residents

are friendly and welcoming,

as they share their storybook town

with those who come to visit.

DSCN0063

From the moment that we rang the tiny bell,

at the front door of the Hotel zur Post,

Ute was most charming and welcoming.

We knew that we had come to a very special place!

Fairy tales…

Visitors come to celebrate the new wine,

walk along the quiet streets,

and find beauty everywhere they look!

Fairy tales…

 The oldest house in Bacharach,

built in 1368,

shows off its small, round, glass window panes.

It was modern glass-blowing technology in the Middle Ages.

Stepping inside is to truly step back in time!

The house is filled with old etchings, photos, and medieval charm.

We enjoyed our romantic, candlelit,

traditional German dinner

in the “Altes Haus” restaurant.

DSCN0152

We cherished magical walks, hand-in-hand, through the Malerwinkel (“Painters’ Corner”),

with its babbling brook, colorful gardens, and views of the vineyards above.

Fairy tales…

DSCN0330

We hiked up to

the ruins of the 15th century chapel,

Wernerkapelle

(built 1289-1430),

admiring its beautiful skeleton

as the afternoon light shined upon its ruins.

DSCN0088

“No doors, no roof or windows,

a magnificent skeleton

puts its silhouette against the sky.

Above it, the ivy-covered castle ruins provide a fitting crown.

This is Bacharach,

land of fairy tales,

covered with legends and sagas”

~ Victor Hugo ~

(From:  Excursions Along the Banks of the Rhine ~ 1842 travel book)

Fairy tales…

DSCN0116

Visitors come to Bacharach each day by ship, train, car, or bike.

Some visit for only a short time.

We are so happy that we decided to make Bacharach our ‘home base’ for a whole week,

as we explored the middle Rhine Valley.

DSCN0159

River boats and trains made it easy to enjoy the castles

in the most romantic stretch of the Rhine,

from Mainz to Koblenz.

We enjoyed the legendary Lorelei,

and visited the historic Deutsche Eck,

at the confluence of  the Rhine and Mosel Rivers.

One day, we traveled by trains, taxi, and a long walk through an enchanted forest

to visit Burg Eltz, our favorite castle in Europe.  Truly magical!

It was so wonderful to return to Bacharach each evening, for quiet strolls along the cobblestones.

We will always savor the small delights of dining in Bacharach ~

the German pastries,

the Turkish Doner Kebab, the friendly Irish Pub, and the Eis Cafe.

DSCN0157

Our stay in Bacharach was simply irresistible.

The kind of fairy tale that comes along once in a lifetime ~

a romantic second honeymoon,

a celebration of retirement,

and

a wonderful prelude to our most special destination of all…

DSCN0427

We were on our way to spend

very special times

with dear friends

near the Black Forest!

May all of your fairy tales and travel dreams come true!

♡♡

  1. I just love this! Thank you for sharing the Fairy Tale ~ Germany is a land of fairy tale castles, isn’t it, along with the forests too? I feel as if I was right there with you, walking the streets of quaint buildings, climbing the steps, taking in the beautiful views ~ and raising a glass or two ~ Waving from Across The Pond ~ Debs xox

    • Hi Debs! So glad that you ‘traveled’ along with us! Such special memories… Have a lovely weekend, my friend! Waving back! ♡

  2. WOW. Dawn, I don’t know what to say other than what you did here is what I wanted. I wanted people do DREAM BIG and to present in a way that exudes passion, and here you have. 1368 ???? THE OLDEST BUILDING THERE? Talk about antiquity! The sagging timbered structures, the winding streets, the river – all part of a dream distorted but yet poignant in our minds of a place to run off to, where the native tongue speaks centuries of legends. Dawn, THANK YOU – DANKE for such a glorious tour for me! Have fun in visiting the others my dear and new friend! Anita

    • Hi Anita! Thanks so much for organizing our Link Party, and for your kind words. You know that I am an ‘old house’ person. Stepping into the oldest house in Bacharach took my breath away! It was truly amazing to step back in time and be immersed in the beauty of Bacharach. We are so happy that we didn’t just spend one day there and move on. We were able to soak up all of the history and charm of this fairy tale town. Now we will always carry this special place in our hearts! Can’t wait to visit all of the ‘simply irresistible’ destinations! I’ll be taking travel notes as I go! ♡

  3. Oh Dawn! Thank you for sharing your fairytale with us today. You and your husband certainly were the Prince and Princess in this fairytale! I hope to get to Bacharach one day! So beautiful! Reminds me a bit of Rothenburg. What a blessing to be able to be there for a whole week!! What gorgeous countryside there is all around. I love German wines from the Mosel region! Did you do some wine-tasting? Vineyards are so pretty along the Rhine/Mosel. I love those ruins at the top of the hill! Such gorgeous pictures. You sure have had some great adventures! Thank you again for taking us there! ♥

    • Hallo, Karen! My pleasure… it was such fun to reminisce! I will always remember my visits to Rothenburg, too. Bacharach has a very special feeling. Our Autumn visit was quiet, without summertime crowds. We didn’t do any wine-tasting, but enjoyed daily pastry-tasting! Hope you can visit Bacharach some day. It’s a little gem! ♡

  4. Hola Dawn!

Thanks to Anita today I can enjoy your pictures and this fantastic Link Party!.
I love your pictures, and I’m enjoying your photos and those explendido places thanks to you!

I wish you a great weekend.

  5. “Danke” for sharing this great post on a beautiful German town! I’ve actually been longing to go to Germany for some time now and I’ve been trying to learn to speak German in preparation for whenever I get the chance to visit! Did you hear about the “edible city” in Germany? I just read about it in the news the other day. (Here’s the link if you want to read the story: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/gardenprojects/10951813/Welcome-to-Andernach-Germanys-edible-city.html)

The other destination I dream about is Hungary. Though I’ve been to Budapest and several smaller towns twice already, the country just seems to call to me!

Hope you have a great weekend ❤

    • Hallo, Chris! We are truly ‘kindred spirits’… with so many connections! You would love spending time in Germany. (I highly recommend Rick Steves’ travel guides and use them for every trip!) I linked his Germany videos in the post. Be sure to check them out! Thanks for the link about the edible gardens in Andernach. I hadn’t heard about this, but am not surprised. The German people are very concerned about taking care of the Earth. Hope this wonderful movement continues to spread from city to city! It would be great to see vegetables growing in the dry moat around the medieval castle in Andernach! I’m always dreaming of visiting Budapest. It is calling to my heart! Have you visited Prague? It is so amazingly wonderful! So many fairy tales… May all of your travel dreams come true, Chris! Sunny summer wishes! ♡

      • I agree, Dawn, we definitely are! I really do think I would enjoy it; every German town I hear about or see pictures of sounds absolutely amazing. Plus it all looks so more more beautiful that New York. Whenever we go, I will check out Rick Steves’ travel guides for sure.

Budapest is a beautiful city! I can’t get enough of it, from all of the Hungarian food to the thermal baths haha. Budapest and Vienna are the only two cities I’ve visited outside of the United States, but Prague is also on my very long travel list. My Hungarian cousin said that whenever I next visit Budapest, he’ll drive me out to Prague. I hear that it’s very beautiful.

        Thanks! ❤

      • Hi Chris! There are so many exciting places to explore! It’s also fun to check out the ‘Travel Forums’ on his site. Travelers are always adding real time tips, as they travel in Europe! Very helpful! There are so many budget-minded travelers using his site to plan nice adventures. Have a great weekend! ♡

  6. Dearest Dawn! It’s great to see your kind words on my post today! It was difficult to decide which European country I would select, but then I remembered “her”…my friend who has been a huge part of my development as a writer. Her country of The Netherlands holds so many fond hopes and dreams that I know are real….and isn’t this a sweet party? Yes, kindness is what we can spread to one another….may you continue your travels today and the rest of the week when you can. Many blessings to you! Anita

    • Chere amie, Anita! Every post I have visited so far has touched my heart and brought happy tears to my eyes. I know that you must feel the same thing. The places I have seen, in my own travels, and the people I have met along the way will always be a special part of me! Toujours! I will always remember the fun spirit and joie de vivre of the Dutch people. It’s easy to see why you chose The Netherlands! Many thanks for your inspiration and thoughfulness, Anita. Tres bon week-end! ♡

  7. Hello Dawn,

Many thanks for the lovely message you left on my blog.
I love your post too, so poetic, you’re right, it’s a fairy tale land. The oldest house makes me dream.
    Thank you so much!

    Marie-Paule

    • Bonjour, Marie-Paule! Your images of Paris make my heart sing! There are so many beautiful places to discover. Merci beaucoup! Tres bon week-end! ♡

  8. Dawn,
Some of my most cherished memories are of times spent in Germany with my dad and my young husband. The three of us spent a couple of days together in Munich and nearby Black Forest where we toured Neuschwanstein Castle. Your dream vacation brought back those memories.

Thank you for stopping by and leaving a lovely comment. I am so pleased to be on Anita’s Simply Irresistible tour with you. I read a couple of your older posts and enjoyed the information about the postcards sailing around the world. Have a wonderful weekend and maybe, you will have a new postcard in your mailbox tomorrow. 🙂

    Judith

    • Hi Judith! So happy that my memories brought back such cherished family memories for you! Thanks so much for telling me! The scenic routes, by car, rail, or boat, are part of my memories, too. The people of Bavaria are also a very special part of a visit to Munich area. Germany is just filled with fairy tale destinations!
Thanks for peeking at a few older posts, too. It will be fun to visit one another often! Happy summer days, Judith! ♡

  9. Dear Dawn,
You took me back decades and gave me the joy of visiting such wonderful, picturesque places. So grateful. Anne

    • Dearest Anne, I’m so happy you are reading today during our ‘Europe: Simply Irresistible’ Link Party. You will be magically transported back to favorite places and discover new dream destinations along the way! Just click on the crown at the beginning or end of my post. It will take you to Anita’s blog, “Castles Crowns & Cottages.” She has linked over 50 blogs with ‘Simply Irresistible’ European treasures! You will have a whole week to visit lovely places with the links! Such a creative way to “travel.”
It’s such fun that we are both sharing the same travel dream, my friend! Wish we could visit over tea and scones! ♡

  10. Each blog I land in on this wonderful excursion that Anita has organized has something wonderful to offer. Yours amazes me because despite a lot of German heritage on both sides of my family, I have never felt the desire to travel to Germany. NOW I think I would love to experience the meandering along the Rhine. Your photos make it remind me of where I grew up along the Hudson River – which makes me wonder if those two rivers connected somehow in my ancestors’ choice when they came to America. Thank you for opening my eyes!

    • Oh, Jayne! How nice! It’s very possible that the Hudson River area reminded them of their homeland. It’s very interesting to think about! Be sure to click on the links throughout my post. You can enjoy some Rick Steves’ videos! He is a wonderful travel expert. Jayne, you would love exploring the gardens around the castles in Germany! In the coming months, I will share some photos on the blog.
Anita has truly created a lovely community of bloggers who look for the beauty in each day… and find it! Have a wonderful weekend, Jayne! ♡

  11. Such beautiful scenery and so super charming. I just love the cobblestone streets, the river setting and the red flowers trailing down the sides of the old buildings. My good friend is German and travels home often…now I know why! How lucky you are to have stayed in such a quaint and historic city! Thanks so much for sharing…Anita’s party certainly is a great way to “travel”!! 🙂

    • Hi Kim! It’s a wonderful way to ‘travel’… and to the best destinations ever! My blog is quite new, so this is an amazing Link Party experience for me! Thanks for your sweet thoughts. Germany is a very special place! ♡

  12. Hi Dawn,

It’s so nice to hear that the pictures brought back memories of special family times. I just loved visiting Crete on your post! In fact, I had to share it with my husband. The beautiful architecture, the colors, the beaches, and the early morning sunrises over the ocean are breathtaking! Sunny summer wishes! ♡

I am so thrilled that this party has indeed brought together some of the nicest and best blogger friends I could ever imagine having. Discovering your hidden talents in sharing what you love, then by surprise, finding others who share many of your passions. But when we all come together, it’s quite a feeling of a miracle to think so many people who can’t see each other can make such a connection.

Bacharach is a place I must disembark and explore! Thanks so much for the beautiful trip down memory lane.
